2020 Asian Readathon TBR

Hey All!

For May I’ve decided to take part in the Asian Readathon hosted by readwithcindy. This readathon takes place during Asian heritage month and aims to diversify your reads, and promote Asian authors and stories.

This feels especially important to take place in now, with increased racist attacks being directed toward Asian communities during the covid-19 pandemic.

Challenges:

  1. Read any book by any Asian author
  2. Read a book featuring an Asian character or written by an Asian author you can relate to. Example: if you’re a woman read a book by a woman, if you’re queer read a book by a queer author or featuring a queer character etc.
  3. Read a book featuring an Asian character or written by an Asian author whose different from you. Example: If you’re not an immigrant read a story by an immigrant or featuring an immigrant etc.
  4. Read a book recommend by an Asian. This can be recommended by one of your friends, or an Asian blogger or booktuber.
  5. (OPTIONAL) Read ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ by Celeste Ng and participate in The Little Fires Readalong and Watchalong.
  6. TWIST: You are able to combine challenges so you can read one book for three challenges if it meets all the criteria, but if that book is by a Malaysian author then for your next read choose one by an author of a different ethnicity to ensure your reads are diversified.

The challenges I believe have been simplified this year due to the coronavirus and therefore people’s reduced access to books. However, I have connected my library card to an app called ‘RBdigital and have been able to borrow ebooks from my library on there, I don’t know if this works outside of the UK, but I’m also pretty sure Libby provides the same services for those in the US.

My TBR:

Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With me by Mariko Tamaki (Japanese author)

This book meets challenge one as it’s by an Asian author. It’s a graphic novel following the tale of Laura Dean and Freddy’s on again and off again relationship. It deals heavily with dysfunctional relationships and have to navigate love not only as a teenager, but also as an adult.

Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri (Indian author)

This book meets challenge two as both the protagonist and the author are woman. Mehr is trapped between two cultures and is the illegitimate daughter of a governor and an Amrithi nomad whose culture and magic have been outlawed. Caught one night practising rites that have been forbidden, Mehr captures the attention of the Emperor’s feared mystics and now has to use everything at her disposal to escape their cruel agenda.

The Enlightenment of The Greengage Tree by Shokoofeh Azar (Iranian author)

This meets challenge three as I’m not Iranian nor a man. Set in Iran immediately after the Islamic Revolution in 1979, the reader is drawn into the heart of a family caught post-revolutionary chaos and brutality that’s tearing apart their ancient country.

Anna K by Jenny Lee (Korean author)

This book meets challenge four as it was recommended by A Bookish Balance. A retelling of Anna Karenina that follows Anna K at seventeen and at the top of Manhattan society, seemingly unaffected by her family and friend’s own struggles. Everything changes however when she meets Alexia, a notorious playboy, and the two are pulled together until a revelation shocks the core of their relationship.

This is also a book I will be reading as part of my ‘Buzzfeed Recommends‘ series.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng (Chinese-American author)

This book meets the optional challenge five. In Cleveland there is a suburb where everything is planned and Elena Richardson embraces this uniformity and always plays by the rules. Mia Warren, a single mother and artist, rents a house from the Richardson family and the two families are drawn to each other, until a custody battle dramatically divides the town and Elena becomes desperate to learn the reason behind Mia’s motives as they stand on opposing sides.

I’d love to hear if you’re planning on taking part of this readathon and if you are what you are planning to read!
