WWW Wednesday: 8th July 2020

WWW Wednesday is currently hosted by Taking On A World of Words, and asks three simple questions that allows me to chat about what I’m reading, as well as my most recent and upcoming reads!

What are you currently reading?

I am reading far too many books at the moment and that’s why I’ve only finished one book this week! I’m not going to talk about ‘The Shadow of The Wind’, ‘The Liars’ Gospel’ and ‘Turtle Under Ice’ this week as I’ve already spoken about these books a lot in my past WWW Wednesday posts (oops). I swear I will not pick up anymore books until I finish these!

So I got an ebook copy of ‘Clap When You Land’ from my library yesterday and I’m so excited! Our little library in the middle of nowhere in the countryside of England never gets any new releases, but it got this one! I’ve been wanting to buy this so I can read it after all the hype, but now I don’t have to and I’m already flying through the ebook. I’m pretty sure this is going to be a four or five star read for me.

I’m not very far into ‘The Poppy War’ and I’m going to put it down for a short while so I can try and finish some other books mentioned in this post. However, I have loved everything I’ve read so far, and Kuang’s writing style is just gorgeous. I am very excited to carry this on soon.

I’m not sure how much longer I’m going to continue reading ‘Queen of The Conquered’ for because it’s already very problematic – I think I’m only four chapters in. The book is told from the perspective of a slave master, who owns slaves that our her own people because she’s the adopted daughter of the former late white slave owner (I think – there’s a lot of info dumping it’s hard to keep up), and she continues to be the slave master so she can utilise the slaves to overtake the white colonial power that colonised her island. It’s an interesting premise and take. However, this girl (the one who is the slave master), has just had sex with a slave and noted that he couldn’t consent but did it anyway – she raped him and she seems to be trying to excuse it at the moment. I’m not really about that as a reader, so I’m going to read a little bit more to see if this is ever address properly but if not I’ll probably put this down.

What have you just finished reading?

I finished this book this morning and it was one of the best reads of the year so far! It’s absolutely a necessary read not just at the moment but always if you live in Britain, and it’s still important even if you don’t live in Britain. It explores Britain’s history with race, feminism’s relationship with race and class and race, as well as other topics surrounding race. It was an incredibly insightful read and I will definitely be seeking out more of Reni Eddo-Lodge’s work from now on.

What do you plan on reading next?

Like I said in a previous part of this post, I don’t plan on picking up any new books until I finish a few of the ones I’m already reading, but if I do pick up a new book soon it will probably be one of these two.

  1. I’m reading too many books at the moment too but other than you I have just started another one. 😂
    I’m sure you will be able to get all of them done. You can do it! 🙂

  2. I’m definitely interested in Clap While You Land – that’s awesome that your library was able to get a copy! I have a hold waiting for Why I’m no Longer Talking to White People about Race as well. Happy reading!

  5. I just finished Becoming last week and really enjoyed it. It’s a breeze to get through, even though it’s long it’s quick.

    Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race looks good. I might have to add it to my TBR. I’ve been looking for some books about race to help stay informed and current.

    1. I’m really looking forward to picking it up, but I should really finish some of my other reads first! Oh you definitely should, it’s a great anti-racism read and it really calls Britain out for our history of racism and how we love to ignore it.

    1. I’ve been putting effort into making my TBR and shelves more inclusive, I’ve not always been good at it but it’s long past the time I did better. Happy reading to you too!:)

    1. haha I think it’s an universal problem for reads, we’re all so good at buying books but not finishing them! Oh get a copy, it’s such a good read and one that is so important!

  8. I really need to read The Poppy War! I’ve heard great things about the series. I’ve been putting it off, though, because like you, I have a lot of ongoing books that I need to finish so I can actually dedicate my attention to it, since it seems like a world I’m going to love. xD

    Oh, yikes about Queen of the Conquered. I’ve got a copy of that book, and now I’m not so sure about it, either. I’m definitely not about that as a reader, either, and I might reconsider whether I want to pick it up or not after all.

    1. haha that’s the problem I’m having at the moment, I’m reading so much atm I can’t dedicate the time and attention to it that it deserves:( Yh it shocked me because I’ve heard pretty good things about it! I haven’t put it down yet though because I have my fingers crossed she’ll be held accountable but idk it doesn’t seem like that kind of book unfortunately
