Top Ten Tuesday: Books I’d Take With Me to A Deserted Island

This week I’ve decided to take part in ‘Top Ten Tuesday’ again hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is ‘Books I’d Want With Me Whilst Stranded On a Deserted Island’, I struggled to to narrow down the books I love to only ten but I thin I’m quite happy with my selection now!

Good Omens

One of the few books in recent years that I’ve genuinely laughed at, and when I say laughed I don’t mean I scoffed at some points, I mean I really laughed at this book. The writing in this is enticing and amusing whilst also portraying complex and yet fun characters who hold such an immense grip on me still. This is one of the few times I can confidently say to you all the the TV adaptation lives up the greatness of the book (with the book in my opinion being slightly better).

Circe

Truthfully, I would love to have the chance to reread this because I’m still chasing the way it made me feel the first time, and I think I may need that feeling of escapism and wonderment on a deserted island. As well as this, it doesn’t hurt that I think I could pick up a few survival tips and tricks from Circe herself, and hopefully feel inspired enough by her to try and make it on my own.

To Kill A Mockingbird

Whilst I’m not sure I’d love this book now as much as I did when I first read it at 16, I still want to read it again and read all the annotations I left then in the margins, and being on a deserted island would give me the chance to do that. As well as that, my copy is so water damaged I wouldn’t mind getting some sand and water on it as it’s basically already ruined and close to falling apart.

Vicious

One of my favourite books of all time has to come with me, it’s non-negotiable, without it I’d just spend all my time thinking about it and wondering why I was too stupid to think to bring it with me. I think I’ve talked about this series enough on my blog that I don’t need to say anything more about it, other than I love it and want everyone to read it (and if you haven’t read it yet what are you doing on here? Go buy or borrow a copy!)

Pride and Prejudice

It’s embarrassing the amount of times I’ve started this book and then not finished it, and maybe, just maybe, if I was stuck on a deserted island with this I would finally be forced to finish it. It’s strange I’ve had to go to these extreme measures because I really enjoy Austen’s writing everytime I read this but something stops me from finishing – I’m not sure what’s wrong with me.

When You Were Everything

A book I read for my Buzzfeed series, and to my great shock I found Buzzfeed had actually recommended a wonderful book?! This book has everything I’ve wanted from a YA book for years and just never got before: it focuses on friendship rather than romance, there are complex characters with flaws, morally grey situations, and obviously, who can forget the Shakespeare references? It’s a book I will be recommending for years to come.

Stranger The Dreamer

I fell in love with this book when I first read it on holiday on a beach in the baking sun, and I wouldn’t mind recreating that feeling on a deserted island. I’ve been looking for an opportunity to reread this duology recently so I’m sure that’s played a role in this decision, but I can’t help but wonder did I pick this just so I would have something pretty to stare at on the island? We shall (hopefully) never know.

Girl, Woman, Other

A brilliant, fantastic novel that I find myself still thinking about nearly a year on from reading it; and if you haven’t picked it up yet please do as it lives up to all the hype. I think this would probably be good to take with me as it features so many different stories that whilst flow into each other can be read separately, so I could pick and choose what to read based on my mood.

The Mask Falling

Ideally, I’d take the entirety of this series with me (including the books that are not yet published), because it’s one of my favourites and I need to know everything there is to know about this world. However, I would make do with the latest instalment of this series, and I would reread and reread this until I can finally come up with some theories that are accurate (Samantha Shannon is a beast when it comes to plot twists).

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

I’m taking this with me because it’s one of my current reads, and I must know what happens. I can’t imagine suddenly not being able to read this and being forever in suspense because I decided to bring one of my favourite books instead. So far this has lived up to all of the hype and I can’t possibly imagine how Reid would drop the ball in the ending to ruin that.

  5. I was so disappointed because I didn’t enjoy Good Omens the book as much as the TV show. Some of the humour was kind of dated for me, and despite seeing the TV show, I found it super hard to follow. Circe is perfect for this topic, you literally have someone to model your life on a deserted island on! I love Vicious, but I actually went with Vengeful this week because it just edged it for me in terms of favourites. I still haven’t finished The Mask Falling, I’ve found it a bit of struggle to get through because it’s so dense.

    1. Oh no!! I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it, but I can see how you could find the humour outdated, it does have that kinda feel to it sometimes. In picking this I hoped Circe would serve as an inspiration for me! And I swear to you The Mask Falling may be beefy but it’s so worth it and it sets up the rest of the series in a really interesting way.

      1. Yeah, I mean you do have to accept that’s the case when you pick up an older book. Ha ha yes, you could definitely pick up some tips on island survival from Circe. I’m sure it is, I’ve just been in a bit of a reading slump this year, I’ll probably go back to it at a later date.
